Eurostar, the high-speed passenger service linking London and mainland Europe, is launching a new direct service from London and Avignon to three popular holiday destinations in the South of France - Lyon, Avignon and Aix-en-Provence.

The new weekly spring service, which complements Eurostar's existing Avignon services, is perfect for travellers looking to secure an early summer getaway. The service will be offered for a trial period during May and June 2013. Tickets are already on sale alongside tickets for Eurostar's existing weekly summer services to Avignon.

Return fares for 2013 Lyon and Provence services start from £99 for Lyon and £109 for Avignon and Aix-en-Provence in Standard class and £199 and £249 in Standard Premier respectively. Summer 2013 sees the return of a rail service from South Station in Boston to Hyannis in the heart of Cape Cod. The gourmet dishes already available on selected flights will be introduced to passengers on board the airline's new Boeing 787 Dreamliner when the next generation aircraft starts flying in Qatar Airways' colours over the coming months.


The Royal Scotsman, the UK's only luxury sleeper train, offers rail voyages through the heart of the Scottish Highlands. Accommodating just 36 guests, the atmosphere, service and cuisine on board The Royal Scotsman is akin to a country-house, with the added luxury of dramatic landscapes passing by.

Scottish born Executive Chef Mark Tamburrini and two Scottish Sous Chefs work in a constantly moving kitchen just six by two metres. The chefs are not only limited by the amount of equipment they can have on board, but also by power usage so as not to overload the train's generators!
However, one advantage that The Royal Scotsman has over other restaurants is the constantly changing fresh larder on its doorstep offering a varied selection of local ingredients as it wends its way through the Scottish countryside.

Smoked fish from Inverawe Smokehouse; scallops and langoustines from the Kyle of Lochalsh; local Aberdeen Angus beef and micro salad, baby vegetables and potatoes from the Isle of Arran produced using a seaweed fertilizer thus avoiding the use of harsh pesticides. Even the chocolates are local – they are from Iain Burnett who has become known as the Highland Chocolatier.

Prices start from £2,350 per person, including all meals, drinks, accommodation and excursions. This year's season ends 26 October.


Scheduled leisure airline Monarch has announced new direct flights from London Gatwick and Birmingham International to Madeira (Funchal) from 15 October 2012. The Portugal flights will run three times a week from Gatwick and twice from Birmingham


Lisbon Airport Metro link

Lisbon Airport is now even closer to the city centre with a direct link to the city via the red line of the metro system. This new section of the red line has a length of 3.6 km and takes travellers just five minutes from Lisbon's Orient Station (currently the last stop on the red line). The project has also included the opening of two additional stations of Moscavide and Encarnação.

From 31March 2013 British Airways will fly from London Gatwick to Colombo via Male in the Maldives.


Icelandair will expand its route network in 2013 with service to Anchorage, Alaska. The company will also increase frequency from two of its UK gateways, Glasgow and London Gatwick.
