ice cream

Those clever people at Simply Ice Cream have done it again. 2017saw another accolade - two more Great Taste awards, one for the brown bread ice cream and another for the mint choc chip.

We are not surprised. It is exceedingly good ice cream. In fact a family member of ours who lives in Kent, not far from where the ice cream is made, has been a Simply Ice Cream devotee for a number of years. He buys it from the Waitrose in Canterbury; his all-time favourite - the luscious vanilla.

Our favourites: the Vanilla and Coffee

Unfortunately Simply Ice Cream is not available where we live but on a recent visit to Kent we indulged. Over three or four days sharing the 120ml pots we managed to devour our way through Vanilla, Honeycomb, Salted Caramel, Coffee, Peanut Brittle and Mango Sorbet.

Naturally we had our own favourites but the flavours that got the most votes were the glorious Coffee, the creamiest ever Vanilla and the tongue-teasing Salted Caramel.

We also liked the Honeycomb – though one of us found it a tad too sweet, and the Peanut Brittle – but we like peanut butter.

We are so sorry Simply – but the Mango Sorbet didn’t do anything for us.

The Simply Story

The Simply story started when Sally Newall, who had her own catering business, started making ice cream in 2005.

At first it was a family affair, just she and her husband, but gradually she gave up the catering business to concentrate on making ice cream selling it first to a farm shop, then to others and then in 2008 to Waitrose.

Simply is no mass-produced commercial ice cream. It is made in small batches by hand, not by industrial machines.

The ingredients are milk, cream, sugar and natural, locally-sourced ingredients whisked together then frozen. There are no additives or preservatives. And of course the flavours change with the seasons and what is available.

Simply Ice Cream is simply delicious. simplyicecream.co.uk
