Cheese! We love cheese. So when we heard that the Babylon restaurant above the delightful Roof Garden in London’s Kensington (a favourite old haunting ground of ours) had a winter menu of cocktails and baked cheeses we were on the phone booking a table.
It might have been cold outside, but the welcome inside was as warm as it could be. ‘We wondered if you would like a table outside – the heat lamps are on, but in case you felt it too cold we’ve reserved one inside too’! The heat lamps were indeed on, and there was a pile of blankets to put over knees and the view over the roof tops of London was tempting, but being the fragile flowers that we are – we opted for the inside table.
Bearing in mind that we knew we were going to indulge in some wine with our cheese we decided to err on the side of caution and have a non-alcoholic cocktail (£6 each) from the very impressive Cocktail List.
‘Strawberry Salad – Fresh strawberry purée with a mix of guava, pineapple and apple juices shaken hard and served long over ice and not a lettuce in sight.
Autumn Breeze – A long, non-alcoholic, cooler. Mint, apple juice, lemon juice, grenadine and soda water. As refreshing as an autumn breeze.
Passion Fruit & Apple Mo – Passion fruit puree, mint, lime, sugar and non-alcoholic apple flavoured rum, more commonly known as apple juice.’ They were absolutely delicious.
‘Absolutely delicious’ summed up the basket of breads that came with our yummy baked cheeses: mother in law’s tongue, mixed olive bread, sour dough, sour cherry and current bread and bread sticks.
Prices for the baked cheeses, include the breads and a selection of nuts, dried fruits and preserves and start from £10 for a Black Pepper Rosary 100g of pasteurized goats milk, topped with pink grapefruit marmalade; rising to £28 for the Vacherin Mont D’or 500g unpasteurized cow’s milk, washed in verjus, studded with garlic, rosemary and thyme – enough for four we were advised.
We gave that magnificent view and the lovely staff a 10, the cocktails and petit fours with the coffee 9 and 8.5 for the cheeses. We would have loved to have had a wander round the Roof Garden for old time’s sake, but unfortunately it was closed for a function.

The Roof Garden Gardening Club
Incidentally did you know that as well as holding a number of special events the Roof Garden also has its own Gardening Club?
The 2015 season kicks off on Sunday 19 April 2015 with a Photography master class. The guest speaker will be Debbie Monique Jolliff, granddaughter of the acclaimed bulb grower Jacques Amand and recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Gold Medal Award for her collection titled ‘The genus Galanthus’ in 2006.
The morning offers a great opportunity to learn about photographing flowers, landscapes and travel. Debbie, along with Head Gardener David Lewis, will be able to answer any questions about creating beauty in a garden and how to capture it. The morning will end with a tour of the three themed gardens; The English Woodland, The Tudor Garden and the Spanish Garden allowing time to try out the new photography techniques.
