Bluebird Tearoom, St Margaret’s Bay, Kent

A tearoom recommendation: we motored over to St Margaret’s at Cliffe, near Dover. On the cliff stands a former coastguard station with a popular tea room on the ground floor – the Bluebird Tearoom.

It stands just below the War Memorial to the sailors who gave their lives during the Second World War crossing the sea from Dover. The views across to France are amazing. Walkers use the tearoom for a light lunch and Kentish cream teas. Fortunately the day we visited the crowds must have been elsewhere because we almost had the tearoom to ourselves. They serve reasonably priced lunches from sandwiches at £4.50 to Lasagne at £6.80 – generous portions with a fresh salad garnish and fresh hunks of bread. The teas include homemade cakes and biscuits.
