First published in 1977 and now in its 36th edition Hugh Johnson’s Pocket Wine Book 2013 is not only the UK’s number one selling wine book but it has also achieved international acclaim.
There is information about 6000 wines, regions and growers throughout the world alongside advice as to which are the best vintages, which to drink now and which will improve with age.
We love the wine and food section with its advice on what goes with what – especially the chapter on matching cheese and wine, pointing out that red wine is not necessarily the perfect partner for cheese. A glass of white is often much more suited. We also really like the ‘If you like this, try this’ chapter which has certainly taken us out of our comfort zones on several occasions. There is also a fascinating section on champagnes and sparkling wines.
This latest edition has been completely revised and updated making it even more than ever the essential guide for wine lovers. ISBN 978-1-84533-684-4. £11.99. Mitchell Beazley – www.octopusbooks.co.uk
