Reform Social and Grill: Mandeville Hotel, Marylebone, London

I loved Reform Social and Grill. I had a feeling it was going to be good when I walked in off the street, exceedingly windswept and very wet, and was given the most lovely smile of greeting by the young woman on reception.

I was early, very early, but the weather was far too foul for window shopping much as I love that area of Marylebone where the Mandeville Hotel and its restaurant are located.

I was escorted to the bar with its deep, comfortable Gentlemen’s Club-style chairs and given a coffee to warm me up whilst I waited. It just went on from there, Justina and Roberto and their colleagues looked after me charmingly until my friend arrived, and then proceeded to look after him too.

The meal and wine were hearty and delicious. I loved my Hendricks gin salmon starter, and whilst not looking very elegant on the plate the braised ox cheek pie with horseradish mash and red wine gravy was really tasty, and I would have loved a second helping of the very pretty Reform Mess. Friend said his steak was great, and he obviously enjoyed his crispy squid starter and apple and berry crumble with custard.

We were having a late Saturday lunch together and round us were several tables of chiefly young women celebrating birthdays, or whatever, with afternoon tea. And a very nice afternoon tea it looked too, and one that appeared to include a glass of bubbles. One menu or another, we were all having a great time. www.reformsocialgrill.co.uk
