It was mid-February and 18°C, bright sun, a sparkling sea and snow on the distant Tramuntana mountains; Brits determinedly sat outside while the locals remained inside.
STAY restaurant was my location for a delightful out-of-season waterside lunch in Puerto Pollenca, Mallorca’s popular resort in the north of the island.
It was this harbour which inspired Agatha Christie to write ‘Storm over Pollenca’.
A ‘menu del dia’ offered a delicious choice: an ‘amuse bouche’ of pumpkin delicately flavoured started the lunch along with warm bread and olive oil.
My starter was crispy Won Ton followed by wild boar and then a fruit coulis and ice cream so beautifully presented I just had to take a snap.
Chocolates and coffee arrived promptly as well as the largest brandy I’ve ever been served. My choice of wine was Accentus the house red – a very large carafe. What a bargain for €33 (about £25).
STAY’s owner Joseph told me that the restaurant had been around for 26 years and was open from breakfast to 10.30pm and had never closed.
A perfect spot for lunch or dinner any time of the year. The décor is modern and bright and the sea views make you want to linger longer. www.stayrestaurant.com
