USA – Florida – Key Lime Festival

Salute sweet Key Lime pie and the tiny fruit that inspired it with events ranging from a pie-eating contest to a wacky world record attempt at the inaugural Key Lime Festival to be held 4-6 July 2013.

Believed to have originated in Key West in the late 1800s, Key lime pie was designated Florida’s official pie in 2006 by the state legislature. Its primary ingredients are condensed milk, egg yolks and the juice of the tiny yellow Key lime, with the creamy filling typically nestled in a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream or meringue.

Festival highlights include an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for baking the largest Key lime pie in history. It is planned to debut the creation, expected to exceed 15′ in diameter, during the Key Lime Piestravaganza on 4 July. The pie will be unveiled at 2 pm; slices of the gigantic creation will be served to attendees who donate $1 to the historic Key West Firehouse Museum.
