World War I Battlefields

By the end of World War I ‘human casualties numbered over 37 million – of which 16 million died and 20 million were wounded … the sixth deadliest conflict in human history’.

Our congratulations to authors John Ruler and Emma Thomson for compiling this comprehensive, sobering and excellent book World War I Battlefields: A Travel Guide to the Western Front.

The guide, a convenient size to go in a rucksack or bag, is packed with useful information on the sites, museums and memorials in the parts of the countries which formed the Western Front, along with maps and directions to the sites.

Interspersed amongst the facts are highlighted boxes containing information on the likes of an individual soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice, a particular battle, the Christmas truce of 1914, two women agents, a tank called Deborah and, usefully, how to trace a missing relative.

For anybody wishing to visit the battlefields this book is an absolute must; as it is for anybody wishing to learn a little more about the First WorId War –‘lest we forget’.
