Milan is one of those cities that I feel I have been to many times – until I realise that actually I’ve seen little more than its airports.
Having studied the Marco Polo Travel Guide to Milan I am realising that I am missing out badly on a fabulous city.
For starters there are the shops. There is the ornately beautiful Galleria Vittorio Emanuele dating from 1867 to say nothing of the trendy department stores and individual shops and boutiques.
Milan is also noted for its museums – the Castello Sforzesco houses several of them, but there are many more, including one just for shoes. And of course there are churches galore including the magnificent cathedral. We can certainly believe that the view from its roof (open to the public) is lovely.
The guide recommends several walking tours taking in different aspects of city life and there is a splendid section dear to The Foody Traveller’s heart on Food and Drink that also lists a number of local specialities and places to eat to suit all budgets. I hadn’t realised that there are a number of cookery courses on offer.
These guides, with their excellent street maps, are a wonderfully handy size to carry around. There is also a large pull out map included. Check out too the invaluable Insider Tips.
