Book Review – Osteria da Fiore

The recipes of the prestigious restaurant

A fabulous restaurant, a cookery school and a stunningly produced cookery book all created by the hard working Martin family.

In the book’s glossy 214 pages are recipes created and used by Mara Martin ranging from starters, and her favourite sea food, to desserts. Alongside the recipes are wine selections chosen by Mara’s husband Maurizio who looks after the front of house.

The recipes are clearly set out in both cup and metric measurements and are not over-complicated. For instance, what joy not to be told to make your own puff pastry for the delicious looking Apple Crown with Raisins and Cinnamon Pastry Cream. Of course they make their own puff pastry in the restaurant, as befits a Michelin star establishment, but they are just as happy to suggest a bought, good quality puff pastry for home use.

The book produced by their son Damiano is beautifully illustrated not only with photographs of most of the dishes, but also of Venice. Also included are lots of interesting notes about the ingredients and indeed about life in Venice.

It is first and foremost a serious cookery book, but it is also the most wonderful souvenir of Venice and of a meal enjoyed at an outstandingly good restaurant, one of the very best in the city.

Osteria da Fiore, the book can be bought at the restaurant Osteria da Fiore, located in the appropriately named Calle del Scaleter (street of the pastry cook), Venice. €36.
