The celebrated wine store Calais Vins on the outskirts of Calais, affiliated to the Franglais wine and beer store at Frethun, has been providing customers with a wide range of excellent wines, beers and spirits for over 10 years – some 2000 at the last count! With its good-value offers, tasting bar and English speaking staff happy to offer advice it has long been a favourite of British customers.
Last year the on-site bakery ‘Pain et Levain’ opened serving freshly baked bread, baguettes, croissants, pain du chocolat and an assortment of pastries. It also offers a take-away service of freshly made sandwiches, paninis and salads as well as providing a 42-seater café for customers preferring to eat-in. Coffee, teas, cold drinks or a glass of wine from the wine store next door are also available.
Making Calais Vins even more popular for visitors is the opening on 1 December of a brand new Fromagerie offering a wide range of regional cheeses, as well as varieties from further afield. The Fromagerie (closed Mondays) will be managed and run by Marc Facchinetti, who has worked closely with the legendary cheese expert Philippe Oliver for the past five years.
As an added service both wine/beer/spirits and cheese can be pre-ordered online ready for collection.
The three stores can be found just off the A16 motorway on the outskirts of Calais at Junction 44 (Calais St Pierre). For opening hours and full information visit www.calais-vins.com or tel: 00 33 3 21 36 40 40.
